Frequently asked questions
Q. What is KELTRACK®?
A. KELTRACK® is Kelsan's trademark name for the liquid form of our friction modifier HPF (High Positive Friction). There are 5 different formulations of KELTRACK® customized for various applications including trackside, on-board, and hi-rail. To get more information on these solutions click on the following links: KELTRACK® Trackside Transit, KELTRACK® Trackside Freight, KELTRACK® On-Board Locomotive, KELTRACK® HiRail.
Q. What is the difference between a lubricant and a friction modifier?
A. A lubricant is designed to reduce the coefficient of friction on the gage face of the rail and the wheel flange. On the other hand, a friction modifier is designed to control top of rail friction at an optimum level (0.3-0.35) in a manner that will not affect braking or traction. Friction modifiers can solve a more wide range of problems such as noise, rail & wheel wear, fuel consumption & green house gas emissions, lateral forces, and short pitch corrugations.
Q. Why choose LCF over grease or oil as a lubricant?
A. Unlike grease or oil, LCF does not migrate to the top of the rail, which can potentially cause wheel slip and/or braking problems. LCF is more environmentally friendly than grease or oil. Also, LCF does not attract dirt and contamination because LCF either comes in solid stick form or rapidly dries to a solid film when applied in liquid form. Kelsan offers three LCF products: LCF OnBoard Sticks Transit, LCF OnBoard Sticks Freight, Liquid LCF.
Q. How difficult are HPF and LCF On-Board Sticks to maintain?
A. Once the brackets for the sticks are installed they are virtually maintenance free. The interlocking feature and application design allows for easy refilling of HPF OnBoard Sticks Transit, LCF OnBoard Sticks Transit, and LCF OnBoard Sticks Freight.
Q. Are Kelsan products environmentally friendly?
A. Yes, Kelsan solid sticks are non-flammable as defined by certain test procedures. All Kelsan products are non-toxic to fish by standard testing.
Q. How do you measure rail friction?
A. Coefficient of friction readings are measured using the de facto industry standard Tribometer manufactured by Salient Systems.
Q. What is stick slip?
A. Stick slip is a micro cyclical displacement and rolling behavior at the wheel/rail interface during a curve. This can lead to the formation of short pitch corrugations and the creation of vibration in the wheel web, which emanates as a high pitch squeal.
