About Kelsan Technologies Corp.

Lateral forces are a result of curving resistance to a fixed axle. They should not be confused with centrifugal forces. Lateral forces increase with increasing angle of attack of the wheelset to the rail.

They are also the forces that tend to push rail outwards as a train negotiates a curve, which in extreme cases can result in a type of derailment known as rail-rollover derailment. These forces are widely believed to be responsible to accelerated failure of track structure components such as spikes, ties, clips etc. They are also associated with higher rail and wheel wear.

Lateral forces are usually proportional to vertical load. So as railroads have increased axle load, the tendency has been to increasing lateral loads.

Lateral forces are measured with specially instrumented track, using strain gauges mounted on the rail. Lateral forces up to 30000 lbs have been measured on sharp curves with loaded freight trains. Some railroads consider that typical track structure components can withstand only up to 10000 lbs force.
