Rail
wear is a major cost area for railroads,
especially freight rail roads with
high axle load and tonnage. There
are a number of mechanisms for rail
wear. One of the major areas of rail
wear is on the gauge face / gauge
corner of the high rail, resulting
from the high flange forces that occur
in curves. Gauge face wear can be
controlled by effective lubrication
of the interface between the wheel
flange and the side of the rail.
Wear also occurs
from rolling contact fatigue, which
affects the head or top of the rail.
Rail wear is most rapid in curves,
with sharper curves wearing more rapidly.
