Kelsan®
KELTRACK® Trackside Freight is
a water based liquid friction modifier
applied using a Portec
Rail Products Protector IV®
Top-Of-Rail application system. When
applied, KELTRACK® leaves a dry
Thin Film on the Top-Of-Rail. The
Thin Film is transferred to locomotives
when they pass over the treated rail.
KELTRACK® provides friction control
at the wheel/rail interface. KELTRACK®
Trackside Freight is intended for
use in targeted curve locations in
freight systems.
The material is similar in
appearance and some characteristics
to a water based latex paint. Its
viscosity and flow characteristics
are specifically designed for the
conditions of freight railroads. Specifically
the material properties are controlled
to ensure good transfer to the wheel
tread with minimal wastage, and maximum
carry down through the curve.
When applied to the top of the rail
through Protector® Top-Of-Rail
bars, the liquid material is picked
up by the train wheels, and carried
down into the curve. The water component
dries rapidly, forming a thin dry
film.
The frictional characteristics of
a KELTRACK® Trackside Freight
film provide:
- Controlled intermediate coefficient
of friction on the top of the rail.
This in turn provides a reduction
of lateral forces in the curve (typically
around 50%), which will provide extended
rail and track structure life. Other
benefits include reduced fuel consumption,
green house gas emissions and potential
for derailments.
- Positive friction characteristics
that control freight wheel squeal.

The Portec Rail Protector®
IV is a trackside Top-Of-Rail application
system that is designed to apply Kelsan®
KELTRACK® to the Top-Of-Rail.
The Protector® IV consists of
a product reservoir tank / control
unit, Top-Of-Rail wiping bars and
associated connecting tubes.
Kelsan® KELTRACK®
is poured into the product reservoir
and the control unit is programmed
to pump KELTRACK® to the Top-Of-Rail
at specified intervals. These intervals
are customizable. When KELTRACK®
is pumped by the control unit it goes
through the connection tubes and onto
the top-of-rail via the wiping bars
which are attached to the side of
the rail. The Protector comes with
a sensor that is attached to the rail
and detects oncoming vehicles.
Portec Rail Protector®
IVs using Kelsan® KELTRACK®
are designed to be placed prior to
a curve (targeted curve application)
where lateral forces, rail wear, and
derailments are a concern. By addressing
these concerns customers can defer
costly rail replacement, rail grinding,
reduce fuel costs, release fewer green
house gas emissions, and reduce the
potential for derailments.

•Increase
rail life by several years
•Defer costly rail grinding
& replacement
•Extend track structure component
life
•Reduce lateral forces by up
to 50%
•Reduce derailment potential
•Significant reduction in wheel
squeal
•Targeted curve applications
•Environmentally friendly, non-toxic
& non-flammable
•No effect on braking or signaling
•Output interval is customizable
•Automatically detects incoming
vehicles
