Rail Protector® IV Trackside
Top-Of-Rail Application System

Kelsan®
KELTRACK® Trackside Transit is
a water based liquid friction modifier
applied using a Portec
Rail Products Protector® IV
Top-Of-Rail application system. When
applied, KELTRACK® leaves a dry
Thin Film on the Top-Of-Rail. The
Thin Film is transferred to Transit
vehicles from the Top of Rail and
provides friction control between
the wheel/rail interface. KELTRACK®
Trackside Transit is intended for
use in targeted curve locations in
transit systems.
The material is similar in appearance
and some characteristics to a water
based latex paint. When applied to
the top of the rail through Protector®
Top-Of-Rail wiping bars, the liquid
material is picked up by the train
wheels, and carried down into the
curve. The water component dries rapidly,
forming a thin dry film.
The frictional
characteristics of a KELTRACK®
Trackside Transit film provide:
1. A controlled intermediate friction
that does not affect braking or traction.
2. Positive friction characteristics
that dramatically reduce wheel squeal,
lateral forces and short pitch corrugations.

The Portec Rail Protector®
IV is a trackside Top-Of-Rail application
system that is designed to apply Kelsan®
KELTRACK® to the Top-Of-Rail.
The Protector® IV consists of
a product reservoir tank / control
unit, Top-Of-Rail wiping bars and
associated connecting tubes.
Kelsan® KELTRACK®
is poured into the product reservoir
and the control unit is programmed
to pump KELTRACK® to the Top-Of-Rail
at specified intervals. These intervals
are customizable. When KELTRACK®
is pumped by the control unit it goes
through the connection tubes and onto
the Top-Of-Rail via the wiping bars
which are attached to the side of
the rail. The Protector comes with
a sensor that is attached to the rail
and detects oncoming vehicles.
Portec
Rail Protector® IVs using Kelsan®
KELTRACK® are designed to be placed
prior to a curve (targeted curve application)
where noise, lateral forces and corrugated
rail are a concern. By addressing
these concerns customers can significantly
reduce noise complaints as well as
defer costly rail replacement and
rail grinding.
•Significant
reduction in noise levels by up to
25dB (decibels)
•Targeted curve applications
•No effect on braking or signaling
•Environmentally friendly, non-toxic
& non-flammable
•Reduce rail corrugations
•Defer costly
rail grinding & replacement
•Decrease lateral forces by
up to 50%
•Decrease potential for derailment
•Output interval is customizable
•Automatically detects incoming
vehicles
